Art Tips for Parents

Want to help stimulate your child’s creativity at home?   Here are some suggestions that might help.

Provide your child with a workspace! A place where they are free to ‘make a mess’. A corner of the family room or basement perhaps? You don’t want total chaos, make them responsible for keeping it clean!
Don’t have space for this? Keep a plastic tablecloth for ‘art picnics’! Keep it handy for spreading out in the house, deck or yard.. Keep the ‘ mess on the mat’ as the rule.
Keep art supplies handy. This doesn’t have to cost a fortune. A collage box of materials collected around the house or yard work great. Fabric scraps, cardboard tubes, buttons, hangers..the sky's the limit. Just top it off with glue, scissors and a stapler.
Display your child's artwork at home. Tired of never seeing the front of your refrigerator? Clear plastic ‘box’ frames are inexpensive and readily available. The artwork can also be easily changed when your child creates a new masterpiece. Just cover in inside box with wallpaper or wrapping paper scraps, then mount the picture and put the top back on. These look great anywhere in your home, and the kids see there work in a whole new way when they see it framed!!
Provide your child with a notebook or album in which they can collect special pictures, their artwork, cards, photos, or artwork from magazines. This can become their ‘idea book’ or personal gallery. Remember to talk with them about what made them choose a certain picture for the book. Was it their favorite colors? a special place? Help them to start thinking about art and their choices.
Take a field trip without having to leave the comfort of your living room.! Through the Internet you can visit art museums all over the world!! Try the WebMusuem,Paris  Or visit the Louvre.
Most important is don’t forget to talk to the kids!!! Ask them to describe the art, why do they like it? Why do they dislike it? Keep them thinking and talking... The rest is easy!
