THIRD GRADE

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:

The student will develop and refine with increasing complexity their musical skills and understanding.

The student will use developmentally appropriate vocabulary to express sensitivity to and an understanding of music.

AESTHETIC OBJECTIVES:

The student will discuss and explain personal preferences in music.

The student will listen attentively to a variety of music, appropriate in length and complexity.

The student will develop self-respect and confidence by knowledge and use of appropriate concert etiquette.

The student will recognize the ways that music might benefit a person and society.

The student will develop an openness to ideas that differ from their own.

The student will explore how arts interrelate.

The student will discuss why people make music.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS:

The student will use developmentally appropriate vocabulary to discuss music.

The student will recognize elements such as phrases, call/response, AABA, and rondo.

The student will identify introduction, interlude, and coda.

The student will interpret and describe the mood of a composition.

The student will interpret the musical idea by using creative body movements, instruments, sound effects, creative writing, or drama drawing.

The student will respond to literature and visual arts through the use of various musical media.

The student will compare and contrast the music of various composers.

The student will analyze the elements that musicians use to communicate their ideas.

The student will use listening skills to improve performance accuracy and expressiveness.

The student will identify basic band and orchestral instruments visually and aurally.

HISTORICAL, CULTURAL, AND SOCIAL CONTEXT:

The student will investigate a variety of musical genres indigenous to the communities in the United States. (refer to Grade 3 Social Studies)

The student will listen to and perform music related to tall tales, spirituals, patriotic music and American folk songs.

The student will listen to and compare music from various cultures and communities.

The student will investigate ways that instruments, dance, and other art forms are used by various communities including our own.

PERFORMANCE AND PRODUCTION OBJECTIVES:

The student will echo short rhythmic and melodic patterns, vocally and instrumentally.

The student will express himself/herself by singing a variety of songs including rounds and partner songs.

The student will recognize treble clef pitch notation.

The student will identify and perform simple rhythmic notation, quarter notes, quarter rests, eighth notes, half notes and rests, whole notes and rests, and dotted half notes.

The student will explain and apply musical symbols including time signatures, repeat signs, fermata, bar and double bar lines.

The student will reinforce and expand the students' understanding and use of dynamics and markings (p, f, mp, mf, crescendo, diminuendo, ff, and pp).

The student will create short pieces of music using grade specific criteria.

The student will use a variety of sound sources (body percussion, traditional and non-traditional sounds) to express musical ideas.

The student will create and perform short accompaniments (including ostinati, borduns, and choral).

The student will identify and select appropriate tempi and tempo changes.

The student will identify and produce a simple conducting pattern (2/4, 3/4, 4/4).
